Excellence in Instruction & Excellence in Instructional Support Awards
Excellence in Instruction and Excellence in Instructional Support Awards are system-level honors conferred to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence. These awards underscore SUNY’s commitment to the use of technology to support access to superior education, to advance the boundaries of knowledge, and to serve the public good. Through these awards, SUNY publicly proclaims its pride in the accomplishment and personal dedication of its Instructional Faculty and Technology Support Professionals.
There are four awards:
- FACT2 Excellence in Instruction: Community Colleges
- FACT2 Excellence in Instruction: State-Operated and Statutory Campuses
- FACT2 Excellence in Instructional Support: Community Colleges
- FACT2 Excellence in Instructional Support: State-Operated and Statutory Campuses
FACT2 Excellence in Instruction Awards
These two awards recognize SUNY full or part-time teaching faculty, working individually or in collaboration with others, engaging innovative uses of technology in the teaching and learning process. A recipient of this award has incorporated new or existing technology in ways that enhance the curriculum and engage students using methods and strategies that are scalable and transportable to other settings.
FACT2 Excellence in Instructional Support Awards
These two awards recognize excellence by full or part-time instructional support persons involved in supporting innovative uses of educational technologies to meaningfully improve teaching and learning by working individually or in collaboration with teaching faculty in the strategic application of curriculum within SUNY. The recipient or team receiving this award has demonstrated excellence through instructional support practice, and the ability to recognize pedagogical opportunities and to devise strategies for infusing the curriculum with innovative use of technology that aligns with learning outcomes.

FACT2 2016 Excellence in Instruction Award Winners
The winner of the FACT2 Excellence in Instruction for Community Colleges
is Judith Littlejohn
, Instructor from Genesee Community College
Judith was nominated for, among many accomplishments, her initiative to implement Blackboard Goals to track learning outcome in online classes. Working with the Blackboard administrator for the college, Judith imported the online course learning outcomes into her Blackboard courses and experimented with them. She then recruited colleagues to beta test and finally offered workshops on how to align Blackboard course materials with Course Learning Outcomes. Additionally, Judith has successfully incorporated peer-review in her courses using Google forms and she collaborated with faculty to create a master course for CEP101, Career and Educational Planning, which is offered at all GCC campuses, online, and in regional high schools for college credit.

The winner of the FACT2 Excellence Award in the category, Excellence in Instructional Support for State-Operated and Statutory Campuses is Dr. Kathleen Gradel, Professor College of Education at SUNY Fredonia.
Kathleen was nominated for her innovative instruction in online and blended courses. Her accomplishments using technology in teaching and learning are too numerous to list, but here are some sentiments shared by colleagues in here nomination:
“Kathleen is an innovator in education and cares deeply for her students and their learning. She is also generous with her time and knowledge as she works with her colleagues to help ensure a high quality education across the Fredonia campus, local school districts, and SUNY.” – Lisa Melohusky /mellow husky/, Online Learning Coordinator at SUNY Fredonia.

The winner of the FACT2 Excellence Award in the category, Excellence in Instructional Support for Community Colleges is a team from Herkimer College and is comprised of Linda Lamb, Associate Dean of Instruction, Bill Pelz and Tabitha Carter, instructional designers, and Cara Boepple, Office Management and Student Support.
They were nominated for their outstanding work to support instruction through the Herkimer College Internet Academy. The Herkimer College Internet Academy began in 1999. The mission is to provide access to selected degree and certificate programs to students unable to attend courses on our campus. They aimed to provide complete online degree and certificate programs rather than just certain courses. What started out as 6 online degree programs in 1999 has grown to 20 Associate Degree and 3 Certificate programs fully online.

The Herkimer College Internet Academy Excellence in Instructional Support for Community Colleges Presentation
Cherie Van Putten
This year there are two FACT2 Excellence Awards in the category, Excellence in Instructional Support for State-Operated and Statutory Campuses.
The first is for the team of Cherie Van Putten from the University at Binghamton and Robin Sullivan from the University at Buffalo. email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org
Cherie and Robin were nominated for their work on TOEP /tōpe/: the T
roject: On-Demand Discovery Learning for Professional Development. This was an IITG project that has since been supported by the SUNY Center for Professional Development. TOEP is a website designed to encourage faculty and staff to explore and reflect on innovative and creative uses of freely available online instructional technologies. It provides a vibrant social network community as an avenue for peer support and collaboration to enable the transfer of valuable skills between faculty and from faculty to their students. Since its launch in 2012, TOEP has been implemented on 22 of the SUNY campuses, has impacting 897 faculty and staff and had over ten thousand unique visitors.
TOEP Excellence in Instruction for State-Operated and Statutory Campuses Presentation
Anne Reed is an Instructional Designer from the University at Buffalo and was nominated for her dedication, curiosity and passion in implementing an evidence-based process to support instructors in designing and delivering their online courses that stretches to include exploring how they can build research around their work. Anne helped to establish the Meaningful Gamification Academy, a collaboration with faculty and a team of graduate students, which provides support to faculty members that wish to incorporate gamified elements into their teaching. She also served as primary investigator on a cross-institutional grant that will result in a new fully online training course for the Open SUNY COTE Center for Online Teaching Excellence.
