Adding YouTube Videos to Blackboard
There are two ways to add YouTube videos to Content. They can be added within a content area or they can appear as a stand-alone.
YouTube videos can be added by clicking the Mashups button on the HTML editor of Content Items (blank pages, items, folder, or tool- assignments, tests, discussion forums) and then choosing YouTube.
YouTube videos can be added directly to a Content Area by clicking on Build Content and the choosing YouTube under Mashup in an online course.
After selecting the option for YouTube a “Search for a YouTube Video” screen will appear. This search will use the YouTube database. Enter keywords or titles in the Search will yield a list of videos to choose from. You may also enter the direct link from a YouTube video either from the address bar or from the Share link option. This may help narrowing the search for a specific video.
When searching for a list of videos, you can use the option along the top to reorder the list using Sort By (Relevance, YouTube rating, or View Count) or when the video was Uploaded (Anytime, Today, This Week, or This Month).
In the list of videos that appear, each will give the title of the YouTube video, and information including the duration of the video, the date it was added, a link directly to the video on YouTube and a description.
Click on the word “Select” to choose the video.
On the Create Mashup Item page, this will display the YouTube Content that will be added. In the first section, it lists the name (which can be changed) and the information about the video.
Under Mashup Option there are different ways to display the video within a Content Item or the Content Area.
View gives 3 options:
Thumbnail, which will display the first image of the YouTube video and users can click on the Watch Video link below it to open the video on YouTube’s player.
Text Link with Player, shows a link where users can click “Watch Video” to display the video on YouTube’s player.
Embed video, displays the video directly on the page within Blackboard and users can click on the play button to view.
Show YouTube URL: displays the address to show where the video appears on YouTube.
Show YouTube Information: provides the information about the YouTube video (date added, duration, user and description).
Using the Preview button at the top or bottom of the Create Mashup Item will show how these chosen options will appear in the course. From here or from the edit page the video can be Submitted or choose Back to review or change the settings. Cancel will close the window (no changes will be saved). After submitting the newly added YouTube video will appear. If the video is added to a text box it cannot be played on this page. The page will need to be submitted to view or using the Preview option on the HTML editor can show and play the video.
