How to Take Attendance in Blackboard
The latest Blackboard update allows faculty to take attendance in Blackboard without having to use a 3rd party tool. It is easy to get started, and the new tool is easy to use.
Getting Started: Preparing to Take Attendance in Blackboard
To get started using the Blackboard attendance tool, locate it in the Course Tools area.
When you click on the Attendance tool link, you will land on the page. The Blackboard attendance page has 5 features:
- Student Name
Set up the grading schema for the full grade center. On the attendance page, click the Settings icon, which is the gear in the top, right-hand corner, next to Meeting. Enter the credit students receive for being Present, Late, or Absent. Next, choose to grade using points, percentage, or a letter grade. An Excused absence does not affect a student’s attendance grade. Instead of showing a score or percentage, the grade cell appears empty or null.
When you navigate to the Full Grade Center, Attendance appears as a column. The grade can be added to the final score or weighted grade. Learn more about creating a weighted total column.
Setting up meetings
To get started, make sure you begin in the Overall screen.
In this view, you can take attendance retroactively and henceforth. Additionally, you can add new meetings in this view. To add a new meeting, click on the + next to the date in the top row. You have to hover over the edge of the most recent column to get the + sign to appear.
Note: If you add past meetings, it will appear out of order. Refreshing the tool automatically puts the columns in chronological order.
Modify existing meetings
In some cases you may need to modify existing meetings because the date is incorrect, classes were moved, or classes were canceled entirely. To modify a meeting date in Attendance:
- Click on the date header
- Choose Edit Meeting
- Choose either the correct date in the calendar or choose Today
If you choose to exempt a meeting from grading, simply click on the date header and Exempt Meeting. To delete the date entirely, select Delete Meeting.
Once you set up the schema, you can begin taking attendance in Blackboard. You have four attendance options: Present, Late, Absent, and Excused. To take attendance individually, locate the student’s name in the list and click on the appropriate attendance option.
Taking bulk attendance
If you want to make changes to all students en masse, click on one of the attendance options columns to make the changes. For the day, you can:
- Mark all present
- Mark all absent
- Clear marks
Taking individual attendance
You can take attendance individually in both the Overall view and Meeting view. When you take attendance in the Meeting view, the date appears above the names. To move forward or back, click the arrows on either side of the date until you land on the desired date for which you need to record or modify attendance.
If you take attendance in the Overall view, the students’ names are listed in rows and the dates appear in columns.
To take attendance, click on the box for either Present, Late, Absent, or Excused.
As you take attendance throughout the semester, the grade showing near the student’s name will transfer to the full grade center.
Individual attendance record
To view a student’s individual attendance grade, click on the student’s name from the Overall view. The screen will display how many times the student has been present, late, absent or excused.
Attendance in the Grade Center
The attendance score showing for the student in Attendance transfers to the Full Grade Center as a single column.
